In the Magnificat recently, I was struck about a quote that said the blinding light of the Father is revealed in the face of Jesus. I imagined, then, the look upon the woman who was healed by touching his tassel. The look upon the woman at the well. The look upon the woman who was saved from being stoned.
The look upon Peter after his denial and then the look upon Peter when he was told feed my sheep.
The look upon Matthew: Follow me.
The look upon John from the Cross: Behold your mother.
Healed. Changed. Saved. Redeemed. Seen. Heard. Loved.
These women and men glimpsed the Father in Jesus. I am sure of it. What could indescribable, blinding to human eyes light feel like? It must cauterize the deep wounds of our heart. Oh to gaze upon the face of Jesus.
I think about Mary and the eye lock that must have occurred when Jesus said: Woman, my time has not come. What blazing heat must have passed between these two—could Jesus have seen His love reflected right back to Him? Was this how she knew she could say: Do whatever He tells you. The Holy Spirit had already inflamed her when she carried Jesus Incarnate and so she knew how to reflect the heat, rather than just receive it.
Oh to have a love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit like that!
This makes me think back to when my daughter’s belly button had opened and she needed it to be cauterized. They had to burn this area in order to close it back up. I remember being so nervous about how she was feeling in that moment, but also knew that it was necessary or else worse things would come—infection, bleeding…
Oh how the light of God must burn and heal instantaneously!
I picture kneeling across from Jesus in Adoration. His gaze upon me, not with human eyes, but from the brilliant white host in the shine of the gold monstrance. It physically reflects light, but the light it gives off is not simply a human shine, but a supernatural blaze. I know it’s there because I have changed through intentional time in Adoration. He has sealed open wounds; he has shown me I am loved; He has called me to things I would not have planned myself.
Healed. Changed. Saved. Redeemed. Seen. Heard. Loved.
And He continues to work. He is not done. There are still places I try to keep from Him, but He is ever pursuing me, asking me to look into His eyes and see the burning light and love of the Father, to receive the Holy Spirit.
How is Jesus revealing to you the burning light of the Father, His everlasting love, so deep, so wide, that it burns through your humanity to reach the depths of your soul?
